What Is A Double Incision Mastectomy?

Share Article
Double Incision Mastectomy

A double incision mastectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove large or overhanging breasts. It is also used for people with loose skin in the area because it produces a tighter, flatter chest. A double incision mastectomy is ideal for those looking to masculinize their chest.

How is the procedure done?

During the double incision mastectomy procedure, two horizontal incisions are made on the chest at the top and bottom of the pectoral muscle. The muscle itself is not affected. Then, the skin is pulled back in order for the surgeon to excise the breast tissue. Liposuction can also be performed concurrently to create more masculine chest contours by removing additional fat and tissue.

Is a double incision mastectomy an in- or outpatient procedure?

A double incision mastectomy is an outpatient procedure. Patients are given general anaesthesia for their comfort, and the surgery lasts approximately 2 hours. Patients are asked to arrange for someone to pick them up following their surgery as they will not be able to drive due to the effects of the anaesthesia.

Is nipple sensation lost following this surgery?

The nipples are removed during a double incision mastectomy. They are re-sized and grafted back onto the chest. Many patients report limited nipple sensation afterwards. There are rare cases in which the surgeon can maintain the original areola complex to preserve nerve sensations, but generally, nipple removal and grafting must be done. However, with grafting, the nipple size, placement and position are more accurate.

Does this surgery leave a scar?

As with most surgical procedures, a double incision mastectomy does leave scars. The scars are horizontal and sit on both sides of the chest.  However, scars fade over time and will become less noticeable.

What is the aftercare like post-double incision mastectomy?

Following your surgery you will need to wear a chest binder for about 3-4 weeks. This binder ensures that your chest adheres to its new contours. You will be prescribed pain medication for any post-surgery discomfort. After a few weeks you will be able to return to your normal, everyday activities like exercise and work.A double incision mastectomy is one of the more popular forms of chest masculinization surgery due to its flat and tight results.
