Tips For Showering After FTM Surgery

FTM Showering Tips

FTM surgery helps individuals make the transition into their identified gender and achieve a more masculine appearance. The procedure is a significant step in this journey and a positive experience that brings people closer to their true physical self.

The recovery period after FTM surgery requires careful considerations to avoid complications and to ensure a rapid healing process. Using the right tips for showering after FTM surgery lets you get the best results from your procedure.

FTM Surgery Recovery

FTM surgery patients are typically given binders or compression vests to wear for about 3 weeks after the procedure. These aid the body in healing and prevent the buildup of fluid. Taking care of the treated areas prevents scarring and the risk of infection. There are some products available to reduce the likelihood of scarring, but following your doctor’s recommendations is the best way to achieve great results. Showering can present many risks that need to be addressed through proper care. The methods you use will depend on your unique needs and the instructions provided to you by your doctor.

Showering After FTM Surgery

Doctors typically recommend NOT showering for 8 days or after the graft dressings have been removed. When you begin to shower, you’ll need to avoid exposing the treated areas to direct water streams. Take care when drying by only patting the treated areas gently or air drying and reapplying any dressings or ointments. If drains are used, take special precautions until they have been removed. A sponge bath can be used in the meantime to prevent unwanted issues during this period.  Bandages must be kept dry until otherwise recommended by your doctor.

Other Considerations After FTM Surgery

The types of procedures performed will determine how to shower and care for yourself after surgery. Individuals who have undergone a periareolar/keyhole procedure may be able to shower the next day. If there are drains, they may be pinned to a lanyard around your neck while showering to prevent any pulling.Other procedures such as the double incision mastectomy require the changing of dressings and the use of antibacterial products to protect the treated areas. Nipple dressings need to be changed after showering and some minor peeling or bleeding can occur. During the first week after your surgery, graft dressings need to stay dry and showering should be avoided. Bathing will allow you to keep yourself clean and support the healing process. Ultimately, your doctor’s recommendations should be followed for best results. Consult with your doctor and ask any questions so that you have the information you need for a successful recovery from your FTM surgery.
