Would I Risk Losing My Nipple In an FTM Surgery?

Share Article
FTM Surgery

Depending on your size and the type of procedure, it’s very unlikely that your nipple is at risk, but many people still have concerns as to what happens to them during surgery. Here are a few different ways that breasts are reduced in an FTM surgery, and the risk to nipples during these procedures.

Double Incision ProcedureWith a double incision procedure, the skin is opened in two incisions along the bottom of the pecs and at the top of the chest. A scalpel is used to remove the breast tissue and the nipples are removed and re-positioned higher up on the chest. Some liposuction may be done to contour fat near the under arms at the border of the surgical procedure. The incision is then closed at the bottom of your pecs.In this procedure, there is a risk of losing all or part of the areola or nipple from the graft due to damage, but a skilled and experienced surgeon will be able to minimize these risks to the lowest possible amount.Keyhole ProcedureIn this procedure, skin is opened on the bottom half or the areola border. The breast tissue and surrounding tissue is then removed through this hole by liposuction.Nipples may be able to be resized, but they cannot be re-positioned. In this procedure, the surrounding skin and areola is not reduced.Less prominent scarring is a favorable outcome of this option, as well as the highest possibility of retaining nipple sensation at its existing level.Research your options carefully and understand possible outcomes before you move forward. Your doctor can help you decide which procedure may be best for you depending on your size and desired outcome.
