Following your FTM procedure you’ll probably want to know when you can resume your active lifestyle. Or, if you weren’t active before, you’ll want to know when you can start taking control of your overall health. Hitting the gym after FTM surgery isn’t something you should take lightly. To give you an idea of what to expect after surgery, let’s answer some questions:

When Can I Go To The Gym?

This is a question only your doctor can answer. For some people, returning the gym six weeks after their FTM procedure is fine. For others, it may be two months or more. Your doctor will be monitoring your post-surgical healing and they’ll give you the okay to hit the gym. Your doctor will recommend light exercises like walking while you’re recuperating, so you won’t be completely out of shape when you return to the gym.

What Do I Do If I’m New To The Gym?

If working out is something you’re just getting into, work with a personal trainer for your first few gym visits. Remember that you just had surgery. Even if enough time has passed to allow your body to heal, you don’t want to go too hard on your first try. When you work with a trainer they will design an exercise regime that suits your needs. Plus, they’ll show you how to stretch, which is an important part of every workout. Remember that when it comes to working out following FTM surgery, your body is the boss. If something hurts, stop doing it and tell your trainer. They will adjust your workout to ensure that you’re not at risk for pulling a muscle or overexerting yourself.

What Do I Wear?

You now have a masculine chest, yet you may not be ready to show it off. What you wear to the gym is all about your comfort level. If you feel like you’re ready for a tank top, go for it. If it’s a T-shirt that makes you feel great, that’s what you should wear. Some people wear sweatshirts because that’s what works for them. Clothing is about the individual and you should wear the items that keep you comfortable.

Will People Stare At Me?

There are gyms specifially for the LGBTQ community, but you may not have one close-by in your neighbourhood. If you are going to a gym that caters to everyone and not just your LGBTQ community, be aware that, unfortunately, society still has ways to go when it comes to trans acceptance. If someone is staring, making you feel uncomfortable, or being hurtful towards you in any way, tell the staff. You don’t have to stand for this behaviour. You’re a human being and you deserve to be treated as such.

Getting fit takes time, especially after undergoing an FTM procedure, but you will get there and not only feel great, you’ll look great too.
