The Average Cost of Top Surgery Across Canada
Transmen in the process of transitioning often place high importance on achieving the masculine appearance of a flat, broad chest. However, despite exercise and hormone therapy, not everyone is always able to achieve a muscular, toned chest due to their natural body type and genetic disposition. Top surgery is a great solution that removes excess breast tissue to help achieve this look and results can be further enhanced with pectoral implants. These implants can be used to add definition and balance to the chest area, which would further masculinize the chest and help you feel more comfortable in your body.
Pectoral implants are made with solid or semi-solid silicone, unlike breast implants which can be filled with gels. Because of this, there is no chance of the implants to rupture or break once they are inserted into the body. Usually, pectoral implants are placed after the patient has already attempted to create the chest contours and shape they desire through traditional means, but some surgeons may recommend patients to combine top surgery and pectoral implants into a single procedure. If you have had top surgery in the past, it is best recommended to allow the tissue in your chest to heal for a minimum of 3 months before enhancing your final results with pectoral implant surgery. Your eligibility to combine both top surgery and pectoral implants will depend on the type of top surgery required, your physical health, and the recommended provided to you by your surgeon. The ideal candidate for pectoral implants are in good physical health and have fully developed chest muscles.
The Pectoral Implant Procedure
If you are interested in this procedure, the first step would be to book a consultation with your surgeon. Here at McLean Clinic, Dr. McLean is a trusted, board-certified plastic surgeon that is widely known as a “Top Surgeon” for “Top Surgery” due to his special interest in FTM and MTF surgical transformations. He operates from the comfort and privacy of his office in Mississauga, and you can rest assured that your needs will be heard so that you can achieve realistic, carefully planned results. At your consultation, you will discuss your desired final appearance and if you have had top surgery in the past, your candidacy will be assessed. Once this understanding has been developed, you will be presented with a variety of implant shapes and sizes to choose from, with your surgeon guiding the process with your input.Pectoral implants are performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthetic. Implants are inserted into the chest through incisions in the armpit, which are made along the outer edges of the pectoral muscle. Beneath the muscle, a pocket will be created to make room for the implant before it is inserted. The incisions will then be closed.During this time, the procedure can also be combined with liposuction. Liposuction will remove excess fat in the localized area to help achieve a flatter, more masculine chest that appears toned and defined. If you choose to combine top surgery with pectoral implants, the process will be slightly modified. First, excess and hanging breast tissue will be removed before the areolas are resized and the nipples are repositioned. Once this is done, the pectoral implants will be inserted into the chest underneath the muscle before the incisions are stitched closed.
Pectoral Implant Recovery
Once your procedure is complete, your surgeon will place bandages over the incisions and a dressing will be applied around the chest area in an effort to reduce possible swelling and bruising. Pain medication will be prescribed to you to help alleviate any discomfort during your recovery period within the first few days post-op. You should avoid strenuous exercise for at least 4 weeks post-up. A follow-up appointment will also be scheduled to ensure your healing process is going smoothly.
